Plastic barrel drums can be used to store a broad range of hazardous materials. These containers are designed to store and transport non-leaking hazardous materials containers safely. Some plastic barrel drums can also be combined with sorbents to secure any leaking hazardous materials containers. For spill cleanup situations, plastic barrel drums are also suitable for use as spill containment containers.
There are a variety of plastic barrel drums designed to function in various settings. All plastic barrel drums from Eagle are manufactured to comply with regulatory requirements and transportation guidelines. HDPE drums from Eagle are made in the USA using USA-sourced materials. These containers are subjected to a wide range of product tests to ensure maximum durability when containing dangerous substances.
To help you find the plastic barrel drum that is best suited to your application, here is an overview of the design features common to all plastic barrel drums and an outline of the various kinds of drums and what materials they are intended to store.
Plastic Barrel Drum Design Specs
Because these containers are often used to store or transport dangerous materials, plastic barrel drums are submitted to rigorous product testing to ensure optimal functionality. All plastic drums from Eagle—whether lab pack, salvage, or overpack drums—incorporate the same robust design features that enable them to house dangerous substances safely.
Blow-molded construction Plastic barrel drums feature a blow-molded, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) construction that incorporates the ideal balance of density and molecular weight distribution. One advantage of using blow-molded containers to store hazardous materials is that they offer a high impact strength even at extremely low temperatures.
The HDPE construction of these containers offers chemical resistance and crack resistance (ESCR) making them ideal for storing and transporting a variety of hazardous materials. Plastic barrel drums are also abrasion resistant which prevents gouging and scuffing during transportation.
Designed for easier storage Plastic barrel drums are stack tested at maximum weight up to three barrels high for 24 hours to ensure optimal storage capability. Additionally, these containers feature a nestable design—excluding model 1656—which offers a safer storage option. The bottoms of each container fit easily inside the lids for convenient stacking. This feature helps to prevent the barrels from shifting and sliding during storage. Plastic barrels from Eagle arte also drop tested to ensure durable performance in all environments.
Industry ratings All plastic barrel drums from Eagle are United Nations (UN) HM-181 certified, which is the transportation rating system recognized by the Department of Transportation (DOT). These containers are approved for the storage and transportation of packing groups I, II, and III, making them ideal for transporting hazardous materials.
Additionally, plastic barrel drums feature a UL 94 HB flammability rating which means that they are identified as a self-extinguishing plastic. These containers also feature a food-grade quality FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 rating from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Which Plastic Barrel Drum is Right for Your Needs?
Plastic Lab Pack Drums
Plastic lab pack drums are designed to safely store or transport non-leaking waste materials, chemicals, or hazardous substances. Lab pack drums can be used to store non-damaged bottles, cans, carboys, and 5-gallon pails of non-leaking hazardous materials. These plastic containers are not suitable for free liquids.
In addition to non-leaking materials, lab pack drums can store or transport biowaste materials or materials intended for incineration. Lab pack drums are available with screw-on or lever-lock lids that will safely secure hazardous materials containers during transportation.
Poly Salvage Drums
Salvage drums from Eagle are ideal for transporting leaking hazardous materials containers or used absorbent materials that have been contaminated with hazardous substances. These containers are available with a white lid that incorporates a metal lever-lock band or a metal band with bolt option for maximum security.
These drums are subjected to a 3-PSI pressure test that ensures safe storage for leaking materials. Salvage drums are also suitable for biowaste and incineration materials.
Plastic Overpack Drums
Plastic overpack drums are ideal for storing or transporting larger non-leaking containers of hazardous materials. Because overpack drums are designed to store larger containers safely, they are also suitable for leaking 55-gallon storage drums.
By filling the overpack drum with sorbents, these containers can secure other containers that are leaking dangerous chemicals. Overpack drums should not be used to contain free liquids.
