Plastic Overpack Drums for Transporting Non-Leaking Containers, Cans, and Drums of Hazardous Materials

Eagle overpack drums are for use with larger non-damaged containers, cans, and drums of non-leaking hazardous materials. They allow you to safely transport, store and secure leaky or damaged 55-gallon drums. Do not use overpack barrels to hold free liquids. If containers of waste chemicals are leaking, fill the drum with sufficient sorbents.

The overpack container is constructed of yellow blow-molded high-density polyethylene (HDPE) with UV inhibitors, making the overpack barrel durable, lightweight, weather, and chemical resistant. Each drum comes with a yellow screw-on lid. These drums are ideal for safe storage, handling, and transportation of hazardous materials and spill containment and cleanup of hazardous materials. The drums can also be used as original shipping containers and storage for biowaste and incineration items.

Plastic Overpack Drum Questions

Overpacks play a crucial role in ensuring the safe storage and transportation of damaged or leaking containers, as well as providing an extra layer of containment for hazardous materials.

The following set of questions and answers explain what qualifies as an approved overpack when storing and transporting hazardous materials, and what features to look for in an overpack drum.

What is an overpack drum?

An overpack drum is a large container designed to provide an additional layer of protection and containment for smaller containers during storage or transportation. It’s used when the original container is compromised or when multiple containers need to be consolidated. The primary purpose of an overpack drum is to prevent leaks, spills, and further damage to the original containers, as well as to facilitate handling and transport. It acts as a secondary container that envelops and contains the primary containers within it.

What qualifies as an approved overpack?

An approved overpack is a drum that meets specific regulations and standards, such as UN/DOT certification, to ensure their suitability for the storage and transportation of hazardous materials. General qualifications for an approved overpack take into consideration compliance with regulatory standards, strength and durability, compatibility and segregation of materials, proper closure, labeling and marking, and documentation and records. It's important to note that specific requirements for an approved overpack can vary based on regional regulations and the type of hazardous material being handled. To ensure compliance, reference DOT 49 CFR 173.25 regulations and seek guidance from regulatory agencies or environmental consultants. Eagle overpack drums meet DOT 49 CFR 173.25.

What is an overpack used for?

Overpack drums are used with larger, non-damaged containers, cans and drums of non-leaking hazardous materials. If containers are leaking, the drum must be packed with sufficient sorbents, no free liquids. Overpack drums are ideal for the safe storage, handling, and transportation of hazardous materials, and spill containment and cleanup of hazardous materials. The drums can also be used as original shipping containers, and storage for biowaste and incineration items.

What is the safest way to store and transport hazardous materials according to SPCC regulations?

The safest way to store and transport hazardous materials according to SPCC regulations is to use an approved container that prevents spills, leaks and contamination. This includes using containers such as lab packs, salvage drums and overpacks. Containers should be properly labeled with appropriate hazard warnings, identification codes and other relevant information. When storing, properly segregate incompatible materials to prevent chemical reactions, spills or leaks. Regularly inspect and clean the storage area to remove any potential ignition sources or buildup of hazardous materials. Next, it’s recommended to have appropriate spill prevention and response equipment available, and train employees in the storage and transportation of hazardous materials. Develop and implement an effective emergency response plan that outlines procedures for responding to spills, leaks or releases. This plan should include proper notification protocols, containment strategies, and coordination with emergency responders and regulatory authorities. Taking these steps will demonstrate compliance with SPCC regulations and aid in identifying areas for improvement.

What size are overpack drums?

Overpack drums come in various sizes and capacities to accommodate different needs and requirements. Eagle sells overpacks in 65 and 95 gallon drum sizes. The size of an overpack drum should be selected based on the volume and dimensions of the primary containers being overpacked, as well as any regulatory requirements or limitations that may apply.
